DaDesktop

Hyper-V Server

UPDATED April 2024

The vast majority of applications run flawlessly on a Fresh Start machine when you're using DaDesktop (DD). However, a handful of applications behave oddly after cloning and require a bit of extra configuration to work properly.

Fresh Start Fix Notes
  1. Keep in mind this is a general approach for resolving the application issue within Fresh Start. Exact steps may vary based on your specific configuration.

  2. Overview: The Fresh Start fix is outlined below. Hyper-V can run into duplicate MAC address problems with the External switch when you clone a machine from Fresh Start. To avoid this, either select the second preconfigured Intel network connection or remove the external switch from the Fresh Start machine before cloning—I'll walk through the steps in detail below).

Fix process

1. Open the Hyper-V Manager application as shown below. Right-click it to bring up the Virtual Switch Manager dialog box.

2. In the Virtual Switch Manager dialog (illustrated below), pick the 'External' switch and then choose the Intel Pro/1000 network connection. Note: this option is only available when using newer Windows 10 templates, version 71 and above. Press OK, save the configuration if prompted, and then close the Hyper-V Manager application.

3. Proceed with the remaining Fresh Start machine configuration as needed. When you're done, shut down the VM from within the operating system and wait until it's fully stopped. After that, clone the Fresh Start machine to the Trainer and Participant machines as required.

After these steps, Hyper-V Server should work properly on both Trainer and Participant machines. If you skip this fix, participants might see each other's VMs instead of their own, because the cloned external network card creates duplicate MAC addresses on the External switch when the machine is cloned from Fresh Start.
